MASSILLON Rocket Jewelry Packaging & Displays has opened its Midwestern warehouse in the former Eaton Steel building.

The company is the newest tenant and is using 43,000 square feet in the facility on Oberlin Road SW, said Wick Hartung, vice president and a broker with Putman Properties.

Rocket is based in Elmsford, N.Y., and has been involved with the retail jewelry business since its founding in 1917. Jerome Shiffman immigrated from Russia and started a business making watch crystals. The company started making jewelry boxes in the 1950s.

Today, the company supplies retail jewelers with packaging and materials used to display jewelry in stores. Rocket’s U.S. operations were in New York and California before opening in Massillon.

Michael Kaplan, president of Rocket, called opening the Massillon facility an optimal move for the company.

The decision was largely driven by the fact that several of its largest jewelry clients are located in the Midwest, Kaplan said in a press release. Adding the location provides a leading edge when serving clients across the country in an efficient manner, he said.

Kaplan is son-in-law of founder Jerome Shiffman. The company now has members of its fourth generation involved.

Rocket also has operations in Canada, the United Kingdom, China and Vietnam.

The Oberlin Road SW complex is owned by Stoneham Partners, which bought the 155,000-square-foot complex 20 years ago, while Putman Properties serves as lease agent.
