Though the walkout lower level of this home looked out onto a lake and lush grounds, the interior of the basement was plain, with builder grade finishes, a dated bar, widescreen television and pool table. The client desired a fabulous entertainment zone where he could also enjoy his large wine collection.

Nancy Jacobsen, who worked with co-designer Rebecca Pogonitz, set about creating an English-style basement by removing some storage space and a kitchenette to create a generous wine cellar room and a luxurious bar. The fireplace was also reconfigured to create a dramatic surround for the TV entertainment.

A Whisper Kool system was installed in an adjacent space to create the temperature and humidity needed to protect the wine collection. The cellar itself offers single-bottle storage for over 1,100 bottles, with additional bulk storage for cases of wine. The intricate design includes walnut custom wine rack cabinets from Kessick Wine Systems.

At the bar, Neolith Calacatta Gold countertops on the working level were combined with a custom wood countertop for warmth at the seating area. Cabinetry was designed to match the wine cellar, with glass shelves and antique mirror added for ambiance. An ice machine and beverage center from U-Line, along with a Cove dishwasher, were paneled to blend into the cabinetry. The Blanco Performa Single Bowl Sink, paired with a Brizo faucet, round out the amenities.
